In order to do this, we need to reconstruct Station Road bridge, which crosses over the line next to Cross Gates railway station.
The bridge, which was originally built by the Leeds & Selby Railway between 1830 and 1834, widened in 1936 and again in 1953, is currently too low to accommodate the overhead line equipment which will be used to power electric trains on the route in the future.
From 31 March until 25 November 2025, the section of the southbound carriageway of Station Road across the railway bridge will be closed to enable reconstruction work to take place. One lane of the northbound carriageway will also be closed to enable work to take place within the central reservation and ensure worker safety. |
The footpath adjacent to the southbound carriageway across the railway bridge will also be closed. Clear signage will divert footpath users onto the opposite footpath between the existing crossing points outside the Newman Centre and the Floorstore shop.
Access in and out of the Crossgates Shopping Centre car park will be maintained at all times.
Advance signage alerting motorists of the southbound road closure will be put up, and variable message signs will also be used at key junctions.
We appreciate that this road closure will unfortunately cause inconvenience to motorists, so we have worked closely with Leeds City Council to agree two diversionary routes to help keep traffic moving.
Drivers making longer journeys through the area to reach the M1 and A63 will be diverted via the westbound A64 and southbound East Leeds Orbital Route, shown in red on the map below.
Drivers making shorter journeys within the local area will be diverted via Austhorpe Road, Manston Lane, the East Leeds Orbital Route and Selby Road, shown in orange on the map below.
We have continued to work with Leeds City Council, who have authorised the installation of a temporary pedestrian crossing on Austhorpe Lane to assist people crossing the road, particularly those with children attending the Primary School and the Nursery, while Station Road bridge is being rebuilt.
Its location is shown on the map below. It will be in position until our works at Station Road are completed during November 2025.
We held a well-attended community drop-in event about our bridge work on 11 March 2025, where the community could view our plans and ask any questions they may have.
Representatives from the Transpennine Route Upgrade were available to talk through the work, what it involves, and how it may affect them.
Our 24-hour Helpline will also always be available for people with questions or concerns on 03457 11 41 41 or www.networkrail.co.uk/contact
Please note, these dates may be subject to change.
If you use the bus or train over this period, we’re advising you to plan ahead and check before you travel.
