Celebrating International Women’s Day across the Transpennine Route Upgrade

On Sunday 8 March 2026, the Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU) celebrated International Women’s Day, recognising the talented women helping to deliver one of the UK’s most ambitious rail programmes.
Date 09.03.26

The multi-billion-pound upgrade will transform the railway between Manchester, Huddersfield, Leeds and York, providing faster, greener and more reliable journeys for customers across the North of England.

Behind this transformation is a diverse workforce bringing together a wide range of skills, knowledge and experience. Women across the TRU programme are contributing to every stage of the upgrade, from engineering and project management, to communications, planning and programme delivery. Their work is helping to shape a modern railway that will better connect communities, support regional growth and improve journeys for millions of customers.

TRU is committed to creating an inclusive working environment where people from all backgrounds can develop their careers, take on leadership roles and succeed within the industry. By encouraging collaboration, learning and professional development, the programme continues to support a more representative and resilient workforce across the rail sector.

To mark International Women’s Day, TRU spoke to colleagues Riina, Jasmin and Gemma, who shared insights into their roles across the programme, the experiences that shaped their careers, and what it means to be part of a project that is transforming rail travel in the North

Their stories highlight the variety of career paths available within the rail industry and the importance of visibility, mentorship and support in helping more women pursue and thrive in these roles.

This year’s International Women’s Day theme, #GiveToGain, emphasises the power of reciprocity and collective support in advancing opportunities for women. By sharing time, knowledge, encouragement and resources, individuals and organisations can help create pathways for others to grow and succeed.

As the programme continues to progress, TRU remains committed to fostering a culture where collaboration and support enable everyone to contribute and succeed.
