We're replacing Station Road Bridge in Cross Gates

As part of the Transpennine Route Upgrade’s programme of improvements to deliver more frequent, faster, greener trains on a better, more reliable railway, we are electrifying the line between York, Leeds and Manchester to provide the power for cleaner, quieter electric trains.

In order to do this, we need to reconstruct Station Road bridge, which crosses over the line next to Cross Gates railway station.

The bridge, which was originally built by the Leeds & Selby Railway between 1830 and 1834, widened in 1936 and again in 1953, is currently too low to accommodate the overhead line equipment which will be used to power electric trains on the route in the future.

Latest Update: Wednesday 11 June

This weekend, Station Road will now be closed over the railway bridge between 8pm on Friday 13 June until 7.30am on Monday 16 June.

Our teams are making good progress and have been working hard behind the scenes to reduce the length of time that Station Road is closed to reduce disruption and inconvenience to the community.

From 31 March until 25 November 2025, the section of the southbound carriageway of Station Road across the railway bridge will be closed to enable reconstruction work to take place.

One lane of the northbound carriageway will also be closed to enable work to take place within the central reservation and ensure worker safety.

The footpath adjacent to the southbound carriageway across the railway bridge will also be closed. Clear signage will divert footpath users onto the opposite footpath between the existing crossing points outside the Newman Centre and the Floorstore shop.

Access in and out of the Crossgates Shopping Centre car park will be maintained at all times.

Advance signage alerting motorists of the southbound road closure will be put up, and variable message signs will also be used at key junctions.

We appreciate that this road closure will unfortunately cause inconvenience to motorists, so we have worked closely with Leeds City Council to agree two diversionary routes to help keep traffic moving.

Drivers making longer journeys through the area to reach the M1 and A63 will be diverted via the westbound A64 and southbound East Leeds Orbital Route, shown in red on the map below.

Drivers making shorter journeys within the local area will be diverted via Austhorpe Road, Manston Lane, the East Leeds Orbital Route and Selby Road, shown in orange on the map below.

We held a well-attended community drop-in event about our bridge work on 11 March 2025, where the community could view our plans and ask any questions they may have.

Representatives from the Transpennine Route Upgrade were available to talk through the work, what it involves, and how it may affect them.

Our 24-hour Helpline will also always be available for people with questions or concerns on 03457 11 41 41 or www.networkrail.co.uk/contact

Key stages

Between 13-16 June and 3-7 July 2025, the section of Station Road above the railway will need to be closed in both directions to allow the existing bridge to be demolished and the new bridge framework and deck to be installed. This will also involve weekend closures of the railway line, with train services being diverted or replaced by buses.

Vehicle access to and from Station View and businesses

Access for vehicles to and from Station View and businesses will be via the Floorstore car park, as shown on the map below.

A marshalled entry and exit point will be in place on the southbound (towards Skyliner) carriageway of Station Road, outside the Crossgates Medical Centre, to ensure safe access for vehicles and deliveries.

Please note that this route is for vehicles only – pedestrian access will remain in place via Station View. Pedestrian access will also be maintained across the western side of Station Road railway bridge at all times during these works, although the road will be closed to traffic in both directions across the bridge.
