In December 2024, a landslip of a short section of the railway embankment occurred near Barrowby Lane, which required emergency works to install a sheet pile retaining wall to support the embankment and the railway line at this point.
Every mile of the railway network is regularly monitored by Network Rail’s fleet of yellow trains, which record the condition of the track and any slight movement; and by geotechnical engineers, who regularly examine embankments and cuttings, which can become unstable over time, especially after prolonged wet weather or heavy rainfall.
Deterioration was discovered in an adjoining location and our teams attended at short notice to install monitoring equipment during the scheduled closure of the line on Saturday, before carrying out work to install a further section of sheet pile retaining wall overnight on Saturday and Sunday.
Further monitoring has shown that the remaining section of embankment between Barwick Road and the new Barrowby Lane footbridge is also showing signs of degrading. Whilst it has been confirmed to be currently safe for the passage of trains, we need to continue our work and install more sections of sheet pile retaining wall over the coming weeks to ensure the railway remains safe.

We understand that working near people’s homes is far from ideal and we’re sorry in advance for the disruption that this will cause. Whilst noise shrouding will be used wherever possible, the equipment that we use means that some noise will be unavoidable, however, our staff are briefed and will be mindful when working, making sure we’ve taken all necessary steps to keep unnecessary noise and disruption to a minimum.
Thank you to the local community for their patience and understanding whilst these essential works are being carried out. If you need to get in contact with us, you can get in touch at www.networkrail.co.uk/contact or call our 24-hour National Helpline on 03457 11 41 41.
