Stalybridge to Huddersfield Survey Work

We’re gathering as much information as possible about the railway and surrounding environment in this area.

Before we get to work improving this section of line, our survey team is out there learning as much as they can about the Transpennine route and the surrounding area. We’ll use this information to make sure our impact on local communities and the environment is kept as small as possible.

Right now, our team is:

  • exploring and assessing the plants, bushes and trees that grow near the railway
  • checking to see whether any wildlife might be endangered by our work
  • finding out how our plans will impact the local community.

Once they’re finished, we’ll put plans together to carry out the work as quickly and smoothly as possible – getting your new greener and faster journeys ready.

Stalybridge to Diggle (Saddleworth): Transport and Works Act Order

This includes relocating Mossley Station and upgrading Greenfield Station, as well as the reconstruction of various bridges, tunnels and highways. This will allow us to install the overhead line equipment (OLE) that will power faster, cleaner trains through the area.

This major, multi-billion-pound programme of improvements will transform journeys across the North. It will better connect towns and cities through more frequent, faster, greener trains between Manchester, Leeds and York, running on a better, cleaner, and more reliable railway.

A Transport and Works Act Order (TWAO) is required to deliver these elements of the Transpennine Route Upgrade. This is a piece of legislation approved by the Secretary of State for Transport, granting permission to carry out the work.

We are carrying out a public consultation to share our proposals with the local community and hear your feedback on our plans.

Please visit our virtual consultation room.

The consultation takes place between Monday 16 September – Friday 25 October 2024 through virtual consultation room and a series of in-person events.

Additionally, we’re proposing to close Moorgate Halt Level Crossing and enhance an already established public footpath that can be used as an alternative. We are keen to hear the feedback and hold a public consultation between Thursday 28 November and Friday 20 December 2024 through in-person event and online form.

Please visit the Moorgate Halt Level Crossing public consultation page for detail.

Following the consultation process, we will consider all the feedback received in order to develop detailed designs. We will also apply for permission to build the Scheme, using a Transport and Works Act Order (TWAO).
