Cross Gates Station has served the eastern suburbs of Leeds since the mid-19th century. Once a key location for coal transport, it is now an essential commuter station linking the city to the wider network. Managed by Northern, it is undergoing improvements to support the Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU).

Visit National RailUpcoming works to fully electrify the railway line through Cross Gates station will enable greener, faster, and cleaner trains. This upgrade will improve air quality, create a more sustainable rail route, and allow for more frequent services, providing customers with more journey options.
We’re reconstructing Station Road bridge, which crosses over the line next to Cross Gates railway station.
The bridge is currently too low to accommodate the overhead line equipment which will be used to power electric trains on the route in the future.
Station works have begun, including improved seating, better customer information systems, and general refurbishment, designed to enhance the customer experience during disruptions
on the wider TRU route.
