Mirfield

Steeped in railway history, Mirfield Station has long played a role in West Yorkshire’s transport links. Originally a key junction for various railway companies, it remains a well-used stop for commuters and local travellers. Northern operates the station, which has been upgraded to support faster and more efficient rail services.

As part of the Transpennine Route Upgrade, Mirfield station has been transformed with new step-free access, longer platforms and enhanced customer facilities. The improvements provide a more accessible station for customers and support wider plans to deliver faster, more reliable rail services with increased capacity across the North.

Benefits for Mirfield

  • A new car park is being built east of the station’s current car park location, offering more convenient parking options and expanding access to the station.

  • Platforms 1 and 2 have been remodelled and extended to create more space for customers and accommodate longer trains with more seats.

  • Mirfield station now features a new footbridge and lifts, delivering step-free access and improved connections between the platforms and the car park, making it easier for customers with reduced mobility, parents with strollers, and those with heavy luggage to navigate the station.

  • Platform 3 at Mirfield Station will be removed in 2027 to create space for the additional lines of track and overhead line equipment, allowing the railway to be electrified and for more frequent, reliable and quieter trains to run.

  • In collaboration with Kirklees Council and the Canal & River Trust, TRU has invested £3 million into its First and Last Mile programme. The project has delivered several enhancements for the local community in Mirfield, including upgrading the canal towpath and enhancing a walking route through the park, to make it easier and safer for people to access the station.
