Manchester to Huddersfield

From urban Greater Manchester to the wild Pennine hills, this 26-mile section of TRU is one of great contrasts. Likewise, our upgrades in this section are at very different stages, with most improvements between Manchester and Stalybridge now delivered, whilst we continue to develop plans to transform the line between Stalybridge and Huddersfield.

Greater Manchester Improvements

We’ve already carried out major improvements between Manchester and Stalybridge in Summer and Winter 2021 including completely reconstructing two bridges, installing a new track layout at Miles Platting to enable trains to run faster, together with improving track and upgrading signalling equipment outside Manchester Victoria to help to bring a more modern, reliable railway and creating the capacity for more trains to run in the future, improving connectivity across the North.

Sunnyside Lane Bridge Reconstruction

We’ve replaced the road bridge at Sunnyside Lane, to allow the installation of Overhead Line Equipment

Stalybridge to Diggle (Saddleworth) Transport and Works Act Order

A Transport and Works Act Order (TWAO) is required to deliver elements of the Transpennine Route Upgrade including relocating Mossley Station and upgrading Greenfield Station, as well as the reconstruction of various bridges, tunnels and highways. This is a piece of legislation approved by the Secretary of State for Transport, granting permission to carry out the work.

We carried out a public consultation to share our proposals with the local community and hear your feedback on our plans.

Stalybridge to Huddersfield Survey Work

Before we get to work improving this section of line, our survey team is out there learning as much as they can about the Transpennine route and the surrounding area. We’ll use this information to make sure our impact on local communities and the environment is kept as small as possible.
